Orava Region
Visit Orava Region with its untouched nature that has attracted many admirers, among them an outstanding Slovak painter, Martin Benka. Beautiful Orava Region though relatively undeveloped part of Slovakia lives by its own rules, but has nevertheless changed beyond recognition in the last half-century, with construction of the Orava dam and the establishment of electrical-goods manufacturing here.
Visit Orava Region also for the fairy-tale Orava Castle – the location for several historical and fantasy films, not least the 1922 classic Nosferatu – was once the residence of the mighty Thurzo family, from where they ruled the whole Orava region. Today it houses a museum – and boasts fantastic views of the surrounding countryside. Another must-see regional visit is the village of Podbiel, which features a unique collection of wooden folk architecture.
Orava Region is also worth visit for its hiking and biking routes around the countryside.
