Slovakia Gourmet and Food Tour

The Slovakia Gourmet and Food Tour will present Slovak food, including the regional cuisines of Bratislava and of the Small Carpathian and Nitra regions. In addition to excellent dining at the best restaurants, you will visit various attractions related to winemaking, local fisheries and other aspects of Slovak agricultural traditions. We have prepared this itinerary so that you will see the most important cultural sites in the Slovak capital – Bratislava – and the surrounding region.

Day 1

Arrive at Bratislava/Vienna Airport, transfer to Bratislava by private coach. Check in at hotel and relax. Begin your stay in Bratislava with a walking tour of the Old Town. You will also visit the Wine Museum, a branch of the City Museum, where you will learn about the history of winemaking in Bratislava. The Palugyay and Hubert collections associated with the two most important historical wineries in Bratislava are among the items exhibited. Visit the neo-Classical Primate’s Palace, where the 1805 Peace of Pressburg was signed. The highlight of the afternoon will be our wine-tasting session at the National Salon of Wines, where samples of each year’s best one hundred vintages from across Slovakia are presented.

Welcome dinner at the French Restaurant ‘Devin’, a stylish venue whose interior features refined touches from the 1950s and which is a Bratislava landmark.

Day 2

Morning excursion to Devin Castle, whose majestic ruins tower over the Danube River and overlook Austria, meaning that this was a closed military zone during the Communist era. Visit the observation deck of the New Bridge, providing panoramic views of Bratislava; lunch will be served at the UFO Restaurant, high above the bridge. Depart in the afternoon for Pezinok, the capital of Slovak wine, where we will visit the Small Carpathian Museum, located in a painstakingly restored winemaker’s house and featuring the largest collection of wooden casks in Slovakia. Dinner is served in Slovensky Grob, a village near Bratislava known for its regional speciality: the goose feast.

Day 3

After breakfast leave for Nitra, a centuries-old Slovak town. Now known for its agricultural fair, many fewer people know that it also has a fascinating agricultural museum with a collection of unique steam engines and even its own railway, which you will experience. Lunch will be served at the town’s best restaurant, Zlaty Klucik, located in a charming villa neighbourhood overlooking Nitra. In the afternoon continue to the Renaissance Cerveny Kamen Castle, which until 1945 was the residence of the Palffy family and still contains an extensive collection of historical furnishings. Complete the day with a visit to the Elesko Winery, one of the most important wine producers in Slovakia, located in the heart of the Small Carpathian wine region. You will inspect the entire production complex as well as the winery’s art gallery, which hosts regular modern art exhibitions. The dinner, with specialities of the local cuisine, will be served at the Elesko Restaurant. Naturally, matching wines from the winery’s own production will accompany all dishes. Return to Bratislava.

Day 4

Visit to the St. John’s Fishery in Jelka, about 30 minutes’ drive from Bratislava. The fishery operates its own restaurant, an opportunity to sample some local fish-dishes including the famous Hungarian-style fish soup “halaszle”. You will also visit a traditional floating mill on the Little Danube River, one of the last ones to survive in Slovakia and now preserved as a museum. An afternoon excursion to the Beekeeping Museum, with its unique collection of folk beehives, will present the centuries-long tradition of beekeeping in Slovakia. Return to hotel in Bratislava. Farewell dinner at Kogo Restaurant in Bratislava.

Day 5

Enjoy some free time in the morning in Bratislava’s Old Town, which has numerous museums and galleries. Afternoon transfer to Bratislava/Vienna Airport for your homebound flight.

Note: We reserve the right to change the itinerary and the places to dine, however any replacement will be the same quality level as the original location.
